NKorea set to test-fire missiles: Yonhap

SEOUL (AFP) – North Korea is preparing to test-fire short-range missiles in the Yellow Sea, one day after it staged a nuclear test, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said.

"North Korea has declared an off-limits area for vessels in the Yellow Sea off Jungsan county in South Pyongan province," it quoted a Seoul government source as saying.

"The North is likely to fire short-range missiles today or tomorrow."

Jungsan is about 40 km (25 miles) west of Pyongyang.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said it could not comment on intelligence matters.

The North Monday staged its second underground nuclear test, with an explosive force much larger than the first in October 2006.

It also fired three short-range ground-to-air missiles from locations near its east coast, Seoul's military said.

Several times in recent years, the North has test-fired ground-to-ship or ship-to-ship missiles in either the Yellow Sea or the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

The launches are often staged to coincide with periods of regional tension.

Yonhap said the North is preparing to launch ground-to-ship missiles with a range of 160 km (100 miles), which use technology based on China's Silkworm missiles.

The South summoned an emergency meeting of top military commanders to review its defence posture, a Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesman said.

The meeting would stress the need to heighten vigilance against the North's "militarily provocative acts," the spokesman told AFP.

Kho, Belo summoned over Katrina sex video

MANILA, Philippines - Finding himself in the center of a raging controversy over his sex videos with model-actress Katrina Halili and two other women, celebrity cosmetic surgeon Hayden Kho is expected to appear at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) today to explain his side on the controversy, which may cost him his profession and even his freedom.

The NBI issued a subpoena that also covers Kho’s girlfriend Dr. Vicki Belo, also a prominent cosmetic surgeon.

The sex videos have spread on the Internet and DVD copies are bestsellers in many shops in Quiapo.

NBI Director Nestor Mantaring said at a press conference yesterday that a certain Dr. Eric Chua could be one of those who uploaded the videos on YouTube.

“We will summon him. But we have to summon first Dr. Hayden Kho,” Mantaring said.

He said Kho and Belo have just returned from a trip to Japan.

Optical Media Board chairman Edu Manzano said Chua was a fraternity brother of Kho but they allegedly had a falling out. Manzano said they received a tip on the existence of the video last month and that someone was trying to sell the video to producers for P20 million, but he did not say if it was Chua.

“He (Chua) was mentioned in a text message which was received by the manager of Katrina, saying he (Chua) has something to do with the copy of the footage,” Vicente de Guzman III, chief of the Anti-Fraud and Computer Crimes Division of the NBI, said.

“On Dr. Vicki Belo, we have to ask her also how she got a copy of this sex video,” De Guzman said.

“Our target now is to identify who uploaded the video on the Internet. This investigation would not take long since the personalities have already been identified,” he said.

Kho is scheduled to appear at the NBI at 10:30 a.m. and Belo at 1:30 p.m.

De Guzman said, so far, the NBI is looking into Kho’s possible violation of Article 9262 or the law on Crimes Against Women and Children.

Halili, accompanied by Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., on Wednesday filed a complaint against Kho with the NBI.

In an earlier privilege speech entitled “A Doctor’s Perversity,” Revilla lambasted Kho for the sex videos and called on the Philippine Medical Association to revoke his license.

“(It is) a clear case of violation of a woman’s privacy and dignity,” said Human Rights Commission chairman Leila de Lima. “The posting (of the video) was clearly malicious,” she said.

“I hate to say this, but Filipino women clearly do not get enough respect. If Filipino men do not respect Filipino women, how can we expect a human rights culture in a world where our women, including migrant workers, will get respect?”

Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines (AMRSP) co-chair Sister Mary John Mananzan also said Kho should not go unpunished.

“Even if they were consenting adults it does not mean that they should announce to the world what they did. I do not know what legal recourse can be done but this was really extreme. It really demeaned people and reduced them to the level of objects,” Emeritus Novaliches Bishop Teodoro Bacani said.

“We give Katrina our support and we vow to promote every measure to protect and defend women like her (who have been) degraded and humiliated by this kind of malicious act,” Gabriela party-list Rep. Liza Maza said in a statement.

“People are falling over themselves talking, downloading and watching the Halili-Kho video flicks. These talks – along with its discussion in the media – are bound to (stir) children’s interest and curiosity on the matter,” Buhay party-list Rep. Irwin Tieng said.

PNP offers help

Amid the outrage over the spread of the sex videos, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said it is ready to help Halili find justice.

“The PNP will offer or give assistance to those in need of investigation, those who are filing complaints, and those who are in need of security,” PNP Director General Jesus Verzosa said in an interview.

“The PNP will attend to any concern or complaint. We do not discriminate. If there is a complaint we investigate, and if there is a request for security and request for investigation, we will investigate,” Verzosa said.

BI watchlist

Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan has placed Dr. Hayden Kho on the Bureau of Immigration’s watchlist to prevent him from leaving the country without clearance from the Department of Justice.

“Pursuant to the Memorandum Order issued by DOJ Secretary Raul Gonzalez, we hereby order the inclusion of the name Hayden Kho in the bureau’s watchlist,” Libanan said in a directive.

Senators response

Revilla is encouraging the other women in the sex videos to also sue Kho.

The celebrity doctor was reported to have about 40 sex videos in his collection.

Meanwhile, Sen. Pia Cayetano filed Senate Bill 3267 or the “Anti-Video Voyeurism Act of 2009” to curb the proliferation of sex videos by prohibiting and penalizing the recording, sharing, showing or exhibiting of private acts without the consent of the persons involved. Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago earlier filed SB 1100 or “An Act Penalizing Photo and Video Voyeurism.”

“I understand the pain, shame and trauma they are going through, but it would be worse for them if they choose instead to keep silent,” Revilla said.

Cayetano, chair of the Senate committee on social justice, described sex videos as the “highest form of invasion of the privacy of the offended party, most of whom are women.”

“Such violation is condemnable and needs to be penalized in the highest degree,” Cayetano said.

Damage suit

Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. said Halili and the other women in the sex video should file a P1-billion damage suit against Kho.

“This guy has damaged Katrina forever. He has destroyed her person, her dignity and her respectability. Images of that video will remain in the minds of those who have seen it and who will see it,” Abante told the Serye CafĂ©’ news forum in Quezon City.

Abante made the suggestion after Isabela Rep. Giorgidi Aggabao, another forum guest, said a civil suit would have better chances of prospering than a criminal case, citing “weak laws against obscenity and pornography.”

Aggabao, who is a lawyer, said if he were Halili’s counsel, he would advise her to file a civil case and claim damages of P30 million to P50 million.

Another forum guest, Zambales Rep. Mitos Magsaysay, said Kho’s alleged perversity reflects negatively on his upbringing from childhood.

“I don’t want to cast aspersion on his parents, but they are also on the spot in this controversy,” she said.

Abante said Revilla was partly to blame for the proliferation of sex scandal videos.

“Bong Revilla sat on the House-approved Bill 3305 when he was chairman of the Senate public information committee. I talked to him in July last year and he did nothing,” he said.

The bill, of which Abante, Revilla’s counterpart in the House, is principal author, seeks to punish the production, publication, distribution, sale, or exhibition of obscene and pornographic materials, and the exhibition of live sexual acts.

License revocation likely

Kho is likely to lose his license as physician based on Halili’s account of her side in the controversy, the chief lawyer of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) said.

“Based on her (Halili) story there seems to be a prima facie case against respondent Kho,” Pharson Mamalo said in an interview.

“There is no presentation of evidence yet so we still cannot say if her narration was what really happened. It’s her side of her story and we have to give Dr. Kho due process,” Mamalo said.

He said the PRC legal division has recorded hundreds of complaints involving sex scandals among licensed professionals, including doctors.

“We have hundreds of sex scandal cases but if ever this will be first sex video case,” Mamalo said.

Dr. Minguita Padilla, chairman of the Opinion Bureau of the PMA, told reporters that Kho’s alleged filming of his sexual encounters was “a dangerous kind of perversion,” because it “involves deception and abuse of women.”

“He is tall and handsome but something in him worries me,” Padilla said of Kho

All your movies on a single DVD: study

PARIS (AFP) - - Scientists unveiled new DVD technology on Wednesday that stores data in five dimensions, making it possible to pack more than 2,000 movies onto a single disc.

A team of researchers at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, used nanotechnology to boost the storage potential nearly 10,000-fold compared to standard DVDs, according to a study published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature.

"We were able to show how nanostructured material can be incorporated onto a disc in order to increase data capacity, without increasing the physical size of the disc," said Min Gu, who lead the team.

Discs currently have three spatial dimensions. By using gold nanorods Gu and colleagues were able to add two additional dimensions, one based on the colour spectrum, and the other on polarisation.

Because nanoparticles react to light depending on their shape, it was possible to record information in a range of different colour's wavelengths at the same physical location on the disc.

Current DVDs record in a single colour wavelength using a laser.

The fifth dimension was made possible by polarisation. When light waves were projected onto the disc, the direction of the electric field within the waves aligned with the gold nanorods.

"The polarisation can be rotated 360 degrees," explained co-author James Chon.

"We were, for example, able to record at zero degree polarisation. Then on top of that, were able to record another layer of information at 90 degrees polarisation, without them interfering with each other," he said in a statement.

The researchers are still working out the speed at which the discs can be written on, and say that commercial production is at least five years off.

They have signed an agreement with Korea-based Samsung, one of the world's largest electronics manufacturers.

Last month, US technology giant General Electric said its researchers had developed a holographic disc which can store the equivalent of 100 standard DVDs.

Dual-layer Blu-ray discs hold the equivalent of 10 standard DVDs.

Sharon ups 'reward' money to P10-M!

Remember the P1-M “reward” money Sharon Cuneta put up last year for whoever could produce “hard evidence” (pictures, etc.) that her husband, Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, has a mistress?

Sharon named that “price” sure as she is that the persistent rumor is untrue and without basis.

Don’t look now but Sharon is even willing to raise the amount to — hold your breath — P10-M because she said she knows fully well, convinced beyond any doubt, that the rumor is the product of an evil mind’s wild imagination.

“In this age of the Internet and sophisticated cellphones,” said Sharon during a one-on-one with Funfare the other day after the press launch of her new album Children’s Rhymes and Lullabies (released by Sony Music), “how come nobody is producing any proof?”

The “old issue” was casually brought up during the one-on-one because Kiko has already announced his intention to run for vice president in the 2010 elections, again as an Independent like he did in 2007 when he ran for reelection.

For sure, skeletons will be rattled and Kiko’s opponents will dig up as much “dirt” (if any) as they can, including the yarn about his having “another woman” with whom he has not just one but two children (daw).

“What else can they throw at us?” asked Sharon. “Everything about us is public knowledge. There’s nothing left to dig up.”

Asked if she’s ready to be a Second Lady, Sharon said she is.

“It’s something you should prepare for.”

Sharon graced the Rock The Vote concert held a few days ago to encourage new voters (numbering more than one million) to register and, that’s it, vote in 2010. Kiko was among those who organized the event.

“I am supporting my husband all the way,” she stressed, adding that she and Kiko thoroughly discussed his 2010 plan before Kiko announced it. “I believe in my husband’s ability.”

Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos is being lured by some presidentiables as their running mate. If Gov. Vilma says “yes,” she’ll be pitted right smack with Kiko.

What if...? Funfare asked Sharon who is an avowed Vilmanian.

“Of course,” she said, “I will have to root for my husband. I’m sure Vilma will understand. If, for example, her husband Ralph (Recto, director-general of the National Economic Development Authority) would run against my husband, siempre Vilma would rally behind Ralph.”

In the meantime, while the start of the campaign is eight months away, Sharon is focused on her career.

Her latest movie, Star Cinema’s BFF (Best Friends Forever), a riotous comedy directed by Wenn Deramas and co-starring Ai-Ai delas Alas, shows to the hilt Sharon’s comic side which has never been fully exploited. BFF pokes fun at the two stars’ physical defects — Sharon’s excess poundage and Ai-Ai’s prominent chin — and moviegoers lap up with gusto the two stars’ self-deprecating humor.

“I enjoyed doing the movie,” admitted Sharon. “It was so much fun that after the shooting, I really missed everybody.”

She’s now busy promoting the Sony album which is divided into four parts, each consisting of English songs with corresponding Filipino translations: School/Learning Time (Alphabet Song, Seven Days a Week/Pitong Araw Sa Isang Linggo, Sampung Mga Daliri, etc.); Play Time (I’m A Little Teapot/Ako Ay Maliit na Pitsel, Maliliit Na Gagamba/Eency Weency Spider, etc.); Activity Time (Magtanim Ay Di Biro/Bahay Kubo, Leron Leron Sinta, etc.); and Sleep Time (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, When You Wish Upon A Star, etc.), plus the bonus track You’re My #1 from Sharon’s Nido Milk TV commercial. The CD comes with a Sing-Along with Sharon Disc 2.

She’s also preparing for her US concert tour that will start at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, produced by US-based journalist Jackie Regala; and, possibly, the production of an indie movie in which she herself might star.

But even if she and ex-husband Gabby Concepcion have recently already “made peace” personally when they crossed paths in ABS-CBN, much to the relief of their daughter KC who had been wishing for it, Sharon dismissed any possibility of them doing a “reconciliation” movie (preferably with KC) — not now anyway...not with the forthcoming 2010 elections.

“I don’t want my family to be dragged into the movie’s promotion and publicity,” said Sharon, referring especially to her and Kiko’s young daughters Frankie and Miel who are too young to draw a line between the reel and the real. “It’s enough that Gabby and I have talked na personally although we’d been talking on the phone.”

And what did she and Gabby talk about this time?

“Wala lang. About small things.”

Nothing heavy, really.

Philippine senator angered by Alec Baldwin's joke

MANILA, Philippines – Alec Baldwin's joke about getting a Filipino mail-order bride provoked a sharp response in the Philippines, with one senator saying Monday that the "30 Rock" star faces violence if he ever visits.

Baldwin, 51, who is divorced with a teenage daughter, said in a May 12 interview on "The Late Show" with David Letterman that he would love to have more children.

The Emmy-winning actor quipped that he was "thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point ... or a Russian one."

Baldwin has been involved in a bitter dispute with his ex-wife, Oscar-winning actress Kim Basinger, over custody of their 13-year-old daughter, Ireland.

Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla said Monday that Baldwin's comment was "insensitive and uncalled for" and an insult to millions of Filipinos.

He called the actor "arrogant" and said he is apparently unaware that the Philippines has a law against mail-order brides.

"Let him try to come here in the Philippines and he'll see mayhem," Revilla said, using a local idiom that implies the speaker will personally administer a beating.

The senator is a former action-movie star who occasionally still appears on Philippine TV.

8 Toxic personalities to avoid

Although we like to think that the people in our lives are well-adjusted, happy, healthy minded individuals, we sometimes realize that it just isn't so. Personally, I've had moments where I'll be skipping through my day, happy as can be, thinking life is grand and BAM, I'll be blindsided by someone who manages to knock the happy wind out of my sails. Sometimes it is easy to write it off and other times, not so much.

Maybe you are a positive person, but when you are around a certain individual, you feel negative. Or, maybe you have an idealistic view of the world and when you are with certain people, you are made to feel silly, unrealistic or delusional. Or, maybe you pride yourself in being completely independent and in control of your life, but when you are around a certain family member, you regress into a state of childhood.

Some of these situations, and yes, these people, can have a tremendously negative impact on our lives. And, although we are all human and have our 'issues,' some 'issues' are quite frankly, toxic. They are toxic to our happiness. They are toxic to our mental outlook. They are toxic to our self-esteem. And they are toxic to our lives. They can suck the life out of us and even shorten our lifespan.

Here are the worst of the toxic personalities out there and how to spot them:

1. Manipulative Mary: These individuals are experts at manipulation tactics. Is a matter of fact, you may not even realize you have been manipulated until it is too late. These individuals figure out what your 'buttons' are, and push them to get what they want.

  • Why they are toxic: These people have a way of eating away at your belief system and self-esteem. They find ways to make you do things that you don't necessarily want to do and before you know it, you lose your sense of identity, your personal priorities and your ability to see the reality of the situation. The world all of a sudden becomes centered around their needs and their priorities.

2. Narcissistic Nancy: These people have an extreme sense of self-importance and believe that the world revolves around them. They are often not as sly as the Manipulative Marys of the world, but instead, tend to be a bit overt about getting their needs met. You often want to say to them "It isn't always about you."

  • Why they are toxic: They are solely focused on their needs, leaving your needs in the dust. You are left disappointed and unfulfilled. Further, they zap your energy by getting you to focus so much on them, that you have nothing left for yourself.

3. Debbie Downers: These people can't appreciate the positive in life. If you tell them that it is a beautiful day, they will tell you about the impending dreary forecast. If you tell them you aced a mid-term, they'll tell you about how difficult the final is going to be.

  • Why they are toxic: They take the joy out of everything. Your rosy outlook on life continues to get squashed with negativity. Before you know it, their negativity consumes you and you start looking at things with gray colored glasses yourself.

4. Judgmental Jims: When you see things as cute and quirky, they see things as strange and unattractive. If you find people's unique perspectives refreshing, they find them 'wrong'. If you like someone's eclectic taste, they find it 'disturbing' or 'bad'.

  • Why they are toxic: Judgmental people are much like Debbie Downers. In a world where freedom rings, judgment is sooo over. If the world was a homogeneous place, life would be pretty boring. Spending a lot of time with these types can inadvertently convert you into a judgmental person as well.

5. Dream Killing Keiths: Every time you have an idea, these people tell you why you can't do it. As you achieve, they try to pull you down. As you dream, they are the first to tell you it is impossible.

  • Why they are toxic: These people are stuck in what is instead of what could be. Further, these individuals eat away at your self-esteem and your belief in yourself. Progress and change can only occur from doing new things and innovating, dreaming the impossible and reaching for the stars.

6. Insincere Illissas: You never quite feel that these people are being sincere. You tell a funny story, they give you a polite laugh. You feel depressed and sad and they give you a 'there, there' type response. You tell them you are excited about something and you get a very ho-hum response.

  • Why they are toxic: People who aren't sincere or genuine build relationships on superficial criteria. This breeds shallow, meaningless relationships. When you are really in need of a friend, they won't be there. When you really need constructive criticism, they would rather tell you that you are great the way you are. When you need support, they would rather see you fail or make a fool of yourself.

7. Disrespectful Dannys: These people will say or do things at the most inappropriate times and in the most inappropriate ways. In essence, they are more subtle, grown up bullies. Maybe this person is a friend who you confided in and uses your secret against you. Maybe it is a family member who puts their busy-body nose into your affairs when it is none of their business. Or maybe, it is a colleague who says demeaning things to you.

  • Why they are toxic: These people have no sense of boundaries and don't respect your feelings or, for that matter, your privacy. These people will cause you to feel frustrated and disrespected.

8. Never Enough Nellies: You can never give enough to these people to make them happy. They take you for granted and have unrealistic expectations of you. They find ways to continually fault you and never take responsibility for anything themselves.

  • Why they are toxic: You will spend so much time trying to please them, that you will end up losing yourself in the process. They will require all of your time and energy, leaving you worn out and your own needs sacrificed.

All of these personalities have several things in common. 1) the more these people get away with their behavior, the more they will continue. 2) Unfortunately, most of these people don't see that what they do is wrong and as a result, talking to them about it will fall on deaf ears, leaving you wondering if you are the crazy one. 3) Most of these people get worse with age, making their impact on you stronger with time.

Frankly, life is too short to spend your time dealing with toxicity. If you can, avoid spending mucho time with people who are indicative of these behaviors and you'll feel a lot happier. Have you encountered these personalities? What have you done? Any personalities you would add?

Ruffa Gutierrez files custody case in QC court

MANILA, Philippines - Actress and former beauty queen Ruffa Gutierrez-Bektas has asked the Quezon City Regional Trial Court to award to her the custody of her two minor daughters.

Gutierrez-Bektas, whose real name is Sharmaine Gutierrez, filed a petition for custody in which the defendant is her estranged husband, Turkish businessman Yilmaz Bektas.

The case docketed as Civil Case No. Q-09-64795 is now assigned at the sala of QCRTC Branch 107 Presiding Judge Jose Bautista, Jr.

The contents of the petition, however, were not revealed since the case falls under the jurisdiction of a family court.

But it was learned from the sala of Judge Bautista that summon has already been sent to Bektas in his address in Istanbul, Turkey informing him of the petition filed against him.

It was also learned that the court would still determine if the case is under its jurisdiction or whether it is not dismissible before it would schedule a hearing.

The estranged couple got married in The Fort, Taguig on March 25, 2003. They had two daughters ages Lorin, 5 and Venice 4.

But on May 8, 2007, the couple announced their mutual decision to end their four-year marriage. Ruffa returned to the country with her two daughters on tow.

Several reports disclosed that the actress is already ready to file an annulment of their marriage but up to this time, no petition for annulment has yet been filed.

Busy day for triumphant Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines – After finally being relieved of the various promotional appearances and rigorous pre-fight preparations, pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao once again will have his hands full with a hectic itinerary today.

Upon arriving this morning from Los Angeles, Pacquiao graced a press conference at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to express gratitude to all his supporters.

Pacquiao, as expected, has several scheduled stopovers for the rest of the day. First among these is a visit to the Quiapo Church at around 10 a.m. for a thanksgiving Mass, something the boxer regularly does after returning home from a fight.

The General Santos City-bases southpaw then dropped by the headquarters of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Quezon City in the afternoon. This is likewise a routine for Pacquiao, mainly because DENR Secretary Lito Atienza is his close companion.

According to reports, Pacquiao is also expected to pay a visit to the main office of San Miguel Corp. — one of his major backers — in Ortigas, Pasig City. He will then head to Makati City before headlining a free concert at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City tonight.

Wade shines as Heat force game 7 in NBA playoff

MIAMI, (AFP) - - Dwyane Wade poured in 41 points to lead the Miami Heat to a 98-72 victory over Atlanta that forced a decisive game seven in their National Basketball Association playoff series.

Miami rookie Michael Beasley broke out of a slump to score 22 points with 15 rebounds, and the Heat fended off elimination with a lopsided victory in the Eastern Conference first-round series.

The see-saw battle, which has seen three double-digit victories for Miami and three double-digit victories for the Hawks, will come down to game seven in Atlanta, with the winner earning a second-round series against top-seeded Cleveland led by superstar LeBron James.

"Both teams are going to be desperate," Wade said. "It's the last game for somebody."

But the Most Valuable Player candidate insisted the pressure would be on hosts Atlanta.

"No pressure on us," Wade said. "We're the underdogs in this series."

Wade delighted Miami fans with a host of highlight-reel moments.

Early in the fourth he raced down the court and blocked a layup attempt by Flip Murray. He got the rebound and then got knocked to the floor.

He bounced up and responded with a dunk on Zaza Pachulia.

"He was a titan tonight," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Wade.

Atlanta's Mike Bibby scored all 20 of his points in the first half, but the Hawks fell behind by 15 in the opening quarter, trailed by nine at halftime and never mounted a challenge thereafter.

As in every game in the series, the team that took charge early went on to win.

Since their game five defeat, Wade had urged his teammates to raise their games, specifically calling out Beasley, who was the second overall selection in the NBA draft.

Beasley stepped up, and his contribution was crucial with Miami's Udonis Haslem limited by foul trouble and Jermaine O'Neal unable to play because of a concussion suffered when Pachulia hit him in the head in game five.

Murray and Joe Johnson scored 13 points apiece for the Hawks, who haven't won a playoff series since 1999 and haven't won a best-of-seven series since 1970.

"They did what they had to do tonight and played extremely well," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "We were just there."
