Grace Kelly's dresses go on show in London

LONDON – The spectacular wardrobe of Grace Kelly, the glamorous Hollywood film actress and princess of Monaco, goes on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on Saturday.

The collection of dresses and accessories includes items from her acting career, her fairytale marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco and her life as a princess, showcasing the style that made her a fashion icon.

"She's one of the few people who deserve this title of style icon. It's very hard to find anyone else today who can be remembered in the same way 50 years from now," said Jenny Lister, curator of the exhibition.

Lister said Kelly preserved her clothes very carefully, treating them "as old friends", so they could now tell her story, 28 years after her death.

Among the clothes on display are a pink chiffon evening gown with flowers embroidered down one side and a Grecian-style bathing robe, both of which Kelly wore in the film "High Society" in 1956.

They were designed by MGM designer Helen Rose and would normally have stayed with the studio, but as it was her last film, MGM made them a wedding gift.

The V&A also has the lace bodice and skirt Kelly wore for her civil marriage ceremony in 1956, and the off-white silk belted dress with gold threads that she wore after the official announcement of her engagement.

"She liked beautiful fabrics, she always accessorized it very carefully with plain white gloves and jewellery. She enjoyed jewellery but she used it just to add a little touch of detail," Lister said.

When she became a princess, Kelly stepped up the fashion stakes and began buying haute couture outfits by everyone from Christian Dior to Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Coco Chanel.

An emerald green wool dress by Givenchy that she wore to meet the other fashion icon of that age, Jackie Kennedy, at the White House is also among the 40 dresses on show here.

Jewellery by Van Cleef and Arpels and the handbag by Hermes that Kelly made famous -- and which later took her name -- complete the collection.

Travel diaries: The best time to visit Sagada

MANILA, Philippines – During the Holy Week, tourists flock the lackadaisical town of Sagada carrying digital cameras, backpacks, a few bucks, and their most adventurous behaviors. The peak season, however, is the worst time to find yourself in this picturesque town.

The locals will agree. As a matter of fact, the groups started a campaign to encourage visitors to come to Sagada on non-peak seasons. Inns are full and have been reserved as early as four months ago, tables are hard to find, and most of all, sites are shared with, let’s say, 20 or more other people.

“We advise people to avoid visiting Sagada during the peak season,” Gareth Likigan of the Sagada Genuine Guides Association said. “There’s heavy traffic everywhere, not just on the roads but also on the sites. Kaya hindi masyado enjoy.”

The main town of Sagada can be explored in less than 30 minutes. With an more than 5,000 tourists visiting on the same dates, this ideal holiday can easily become a nightmare.

The best times to visit Sagada are on less harried days, where you’re sharing the town with very few backpackers. Guides are not hard to come by, buses are not crowded, the streets are hushed, and there are no lines in Sumaging Cave.

It’s a travel cliché but if you want to enjoy the solitude, avoid the crowd.

Long, long road

Even before the call of tourism reached Sagada, it has been a secret getaway for artists and writers. Although Halsema Highway had long been cemented to ease the trip from Baguio, its rustic allure remains as some roads still cover visitors in dusts and sweat and sun.

“Some locals don’t want to fix the road because it comes with the thrill. If you noticed, some parts are cemented while some remained potholed and dusty. Sagada is not Sagada without the long jarring trip,” Percival, our hired driver, explained as we moved on another dirt road, the wheels of his FX barely a few inches from the cliff not barricaded from the road.

Tucked between the Cordillera and Ilocos mountain ranges, Sagada is an oasis after a 12-hour long craggy trip on squiggly roads sandwiched between pines and gorges.

Un-airconditioned provincial Lizardo buses ply the route from 6 a.m. until 11 a.m. On peak seasons, buses disappear as early as 9 a.m. And if you still want to get to Sagada, like my group, the best option would be to hire a Baguio taxi for a larger sum.

Full house

When my friends and I decided on Sagada as a Holy Week destination, a colleague advised me to call inns ahead for a reservation. I listed down more than 20 establishments and it took me more than 3 hours to find a vacant room—and the one I found requires a 15-minute walk from the main town.

“Most rooms have been reserved as early as December,” Derrick Piluden shared as he ushered us into a room in Yabami Lodge, a ranch-style inn.

Outside, vehicles whizzed by, scouting for free rooms before the sun settled for the night. There are inns that don’t accept reservations and instead prefer walk-in tenants.

Homestays are popular options, too popular that almost all residents have extra houses they rent out for willing visitors at cheaper rates. Most inns have restaurants but better dining choices are still in the main town.

Less dining choices

Sagada is a food-lovers haven, one that will not disappoint even the pickiest eaters. Vegetables are still crunchy, coffee beans and tea leaves are picked from backyard farms, and almost, if not all, establishments serve the staple Sagadan red rice.

During peak seasons, however, tables are very hard to find. One of my trip’s biggest disappointments was not finding a place to eat at 2 p.m. right after our 6-hour trek on Mt Ampacao. We literally had to walk around town in search for food!

My special favorite is Shamrock Café, a small inconspicuous hole-in-the-wall dining area located under the city hall. Cooked by Manang Graal, the hearty Shamrock Meal comes with adobo chicken, rice, stir-fried vegetables and desserts.

Another interesting spot to hang out for karaoke is Rock Café, a dining area hidden under large boulders. To enter, guests have to literally walk down a dimly-lit stone stairway that leads to a bohemian-inspired den. They don’t serve lunch, though.

One of the most-visited is Log Cabin but you have to call months ahead to reserve a table especially on peak seasons. They have Saturday night buffet where the bread, the cheese, the pasta—everything—are made from scratch. They also offer a vegetarian plate and Chef Aklay personally cuts the meats for you, in exchange for a few stories. The place shuns the cold and it’s easy to exchange pleasantries with the other guests by the fireplace.

I also found some bizarre food choices you should not miss. During my visit, strawberry shakes are served warm and the local halo-halo (mixed sweets in shaved ice) has steamed macaroni. I have yet to try the Sagada Lemon Pie House for its famous lemon pies, which according to some friends, takes days to make!

Lines ruin the fun

Every visit to Sagada includes caving in Sumaging but the downside on a peak season visit is you have to literally line up in the caves. Sometimes, you have to wait for 15 minutes just to climb down a rope!

Some groups are also too noisy, you’ll literally hear them screaming while crossing a limestone formation, while avoiding bat feces, while taking a dip on the pool of freezing water, while taking photos—what a nightmare!

Sagada was one of the few areas Spanish conquistadors failed to reach in their conquest of the Philippines, giving it the leeway to preserve its culture and traditions. Hanging coffins are the must-visit areas in Sagada. No trip to Sagada is complete without the coffins.

“They are hang so they are close to the heavens and close to the earth to help the locals,” Vien, our local tour guider, shared as he point to a group of coffins a mile away. Below the limestone cliff where the coffins are placed, a large group had been taking photos.

“The ritual is no longer being practiced but there are still some—especially the elders—who want to be buried that way,” he continued. “There are many requirements and corpses had to be sit for 15 days before they are finally brought to the cliffs.”

Pinikpikan

On our last night in Sagada, we did the pinikpikan, a ritual of killing chicken to foresee the future. It's done by the tribe leaders before the harvest season to predict if the harvest would be good or bad.

Pinikpikan shows omens through the innards of the chicken, whether the liver had been cooked or not, or the gall bladder burst through the beating. Very few locals knew how to translate the signs although guides usually help visitors replicate the ritual on their visits.

Covered in the thickest jackets we brought and with cotton bonnets bought in town, we watched as Percival taught us how to do the ritual. He pulls the chicken wings back to cover the head, and with a 20-inch stick, started to beat the different parts of the chicken.

“We call this ritual ‘Killing me Softly’ because you beat the chicken until it dies, it’s a very slow and long process,” he hit the chicken in the head and we stared aghast as the chicken convulsed and clucked, struggling for life.

“You hit the chicken in the neck and in the wings—these are the most delicious part once you cook them because the blood clots in these areas,” he explained. It took him another five minutes of continuous beating before the chicken finally died and it was thrown into the fire.

Once the feathers had come off, the thin native chicken was brought inside the house to be later boiled with cabbages and smoked pork and served to a group of trembling visitors not used to a Sagada night.

But before the chicken lands on the table, Derrick’s wife cuts the lower part of the chicken with a paring knife, careful not to sever the innards. As she cracked open the lithe body, our video cameras rolled and we awaited the prediction.

“The liver is half-cooked but it’s still in good shape, though it would have been better if its facing the other way. The gall bladder did not burst which is a good sign,” she said while scrutinizing the chicken with her thumb and fore finger. “This means your trip back home will be uneventful but good news will wait for you in Manila. These news will change your lives.”

The reading seemed general and we laughed it off as we ate. But true enough, our lives changed drastically when we returned home.

Lindsay Lohan contacts dad Michael

Lindsay Lohan has been in touch with her father Michael since his heart attack.

Michael suffered a minor heart attack on March 16 but has heard from Lindsay, who he has often had public feuds with after he revealed private voicemail messages and discussed her health to the press.

He said: "I got a message from Lindsay which read, 'OMG. Hope you are okay' and my other kids have all been in contact with me too."

However, 49-year-old Michael claims it will take more than a heart attack to end his life, admitting he has been through plenty of scrapes in the past.

He said: "I've been through a lot in my life, been to jail, various court cases, even drove a Ferrari over a cliff once, so it's going to take a lot more than this to finish me off."

Michael is due to undergo an angioplasty in to remove blockages in his coronary arteries, but he admits more surgery may be needed if it does not work.

He told RadarOnline.com: "The surgeons are hoping this will work but if it does not then I may well have to get an immediate by-pass operation."

Michael recently had a run-in with Lindsay after claiming she needs to go to rehab for a prescription drug problem.

Vice Ganda: Anne will survive 'wardrobe malfunction' crisis

MANILA, Philippines - Comedian-actor Vice Ganda showed his support to actress Anne Curtis as he attended the bar press conference of latter's upcoming movie "Babe, I Love You," with Sam Milby.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, "Showtime" unevictable judge Vice Ganda condemned all those who took part in the proliferation of Anne's "Bora" photo.

Anne snatched the limelight after her controversial photo showing her right breast exposed while dancing for an ASAP summer special episode in Boracay went viral on social networks such as Facebook.

The photo also landed in different gossip sites, blogs, and tabloids.

"Sa nangyaring ito ay hindi naman si Anne Curtis ang nakakaawa. Ang nakakaawa ay 'yong mga taong hindi marunong mag-isip at talagang walang puso na na hindi nila naisip na maaring mangyari 'yon sa mga kapatid nilang babae, sa pamangkin nilang babae, sa tiyahin nila sa nanay nila," Vice Ganda said.

He admitted that he has also received the photo of Anne, but he never tried to open it out of respect to his co-worker. Anne is one of the co-hosts of "Showtime."

Vice Ganda said that after what happened, he believes that Anne is still okay, and that the actress knows how to move on.

"Wala masaya ako para kay Anne kasi matapos ang lahat ng mga nangyaring ito ay nandiyan pa din siya, nakatayo at nakangiti. She still manages to smile. Talagang survivor si Anne Curtis. Para sa akin, wala namang nawala kay Anne Curtis. Ganoon talaga kapag Dyosa, maliit lang na bahagi ng katawan mo ang makita ay nagkakandarapa na sila, ganoon talaga kapag Dyosa," Vice Ganda said.

First lady to food makers: Hurry up on healthy food

Food manufacturers need to work faster to re-formulate and re-package food so that it is healthier for kids, US first lady Michelle Obama said on Tuesday.

Obama, who is spearheading an administration initiative on child obesity, praised members of the Grocery Manufacturers Association for reducing calories and salt in food.

"But I'm here today to urge all of you to move faster and to go farther because the truth is we don't have a moment to waste -- because a baby born today could be less than a decade away from showing the first signs of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, Type II diabetes, if he or she is obese as a child," she told the meeting of the trade association.

"So we need you all to step it up," said Obama, who sponsors local school children to help her maintain and harvest a garden on the White House grounds.

Grocery Manufacturers Association Chairman Richard Wolford, who is also chairman, president and chief executive officer of Del Monte Foods Company, said the group supported the initiative and had already done a lot.

"In recent years, our companies have reduced calories, sugar, fat and sodium in more than 10,000 products," he said in a statement. "They have also enhanced the nutritional profile of many products with the addition of whole grains, fiber or other nutrients and created the informative and convenient 100-calorie pack.

"Food and beverage companies have changed the way they advertise and market their products -- children under 12 now see significantly fewer food, beverage and restaurant ads on television. And at the same time, they are seeing more ads for soup, juice, fruit and vegetables."

Complete re-think

Obama said companies need to do more.

"And we need you not just to tweak around the edges but to entirely rethink the products that you're offering, the information that you provide about these products and how you market those products to our children," she said.

President Barack Obama last month assigned Cabinet officers to come up with "a comprehensive interagency plan" and asked his wife to head a national public awareness effort.

Two industry groups, the American Beverage Association and the GMA, have pledged their help and earlier this month the beverage makers announced progress on getting sugary soft drinks out of schools.

The administration said last month it would provide $400 million for its Healthy Food Financing Initiative to eliminate "food deserts" where the only food sources are typically convenience stores or gas stations.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that 68 percent of U.S. adults are overweight and half of these are obese, with a body mass index of 30 or higher. A third of US children are obese.

It identified Charice as a "new little chick...who's mountain-and-valley vocals (that means range, kids) are the only reason you will need to fall in love with her sound."

The article also featured four other songs including Psapp's "Mister Ant," Lady GaGa's "Telephone: an Electrolightz remix," Gin Wigmore's "Don't Stop" and Matisse's "Better Than Her." It added that this week's fave five "will have your bottom uncontrollably shimmying out of your kilt."

Charice said she is happy that her single "Pyramid" has been downloaded over a million times despite tough competition from other pop artists.

"Super happy po ako. New York Post is really BIG. And really happy na ako yung napili nila na i-crown as New Pop Princess, although there's a lot of teen artists po talaga dito sa Amerika na magaling po talagang pop singers. I wanna thank them po sa pagpili nila sa akin. And thanks po sa lahat ng nagview ng Pyramid ko, it's finally over 1M views! I can't wait po na makita nila yung official music video. Arnel Pineda to sing anthem in Pacquiao-Clottey bout

MANILA, Philippines -- It's confirmed.

Arnel Pineda, the Filipino front man of popular American rock band "Journey," will sing the Philippine national anthem in Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s much-awaited fight with Ghanaian Joshua "The Grand Master" Clottey on March 13 (March 14 in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

In an exclusive interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Pineda confirmed that he was invited by Pacquiao to sing "Lupang Hinirang" in his upcoming fight.

"Pupunta ako sa Dallas to sing sa laban ni Manny [Pacquiao].This Thursday [ang alis ko]. (I am going to Dallas this Thursday to sing in Pacquiao's fight.)," Pineda said.

"I'm really happy kasi matutuloy na. Nahihiya na ako kay Manny kasi pangatlong invitation na ito sa akin. Baka kasi isipin ay iniisnab ko. So finally, matutuloy na. (This is my third invitation from Manny who might think I'm snubbing him. I'm happy this is finally pushing through), " he said.

The crooner said he was not able to sing in Pacquiao's previous fights because of his hectic schedule as Journey's vocalist.

Pineda, who was introduced over the phone to Pacquiao by common friends, was also present during the boxer's birthday party in General Santos last December.

Pineda is currently part of ABS-CBN's weekly variety show "ASAP XV."

Aside from singing in the Pacquiao-Clottey bout, Pineda is also set to fly back to US this coming

Kris apologizes to Ruffa, Annabelle

MANILA, Philippines - Celebrity TV host Kris Aquino on Monday apologized to fellow "The Buzz" co-host Ruffa Gutierrez and her mother, Annabelle Rama, after Gutierrez walked out of the show on Sunday, March 7.

In a statement sent via text, Aquino said she had dinner with her brother, Liberal Party presidential bet Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, who asked why he was being dragged into the issue.

Rama had earlier commented that people should not vote for Noynoy because the Aquino family was now becoming too proud even though the Liberal Party senator had yet to win.

Aquino said she and Gutierrez had a good working relationship for the past two years when the latter replaced Cristy Fermin as "The Buzz" co-host.

She also maintained that she never meant any malice against Gutierrez when she said that staying "Kapamilya" was much better. Gutierrez is leaving ABS-CBN after signing a non-exclusive contract with TV5 where she will do five shows including a showbiz talk show with Mo Twister and Cristy Fermin.

"I would like to extend a loving hug to Ruffa. I viewed the tape & although I still feel I gave my comment w/ affection, maybe it made her feel even worse because she's now moving in a new direction," she said in her text.

She added: "It is w/ Ruffa that I enjoyed a healthy working relationship with & I only have good words to say about her. To Ruffa, I sincerely apologize for causing u hurt. My brother Noynoy would like to add that we live in a democracy, one where we are very free to make our own choice for president."

Aquino also noted Rama disliked Noynoy and the Aquino family because of their association and "vocal proclamation of admiration for Dingdong [Dantes] and his selfless contribution to help Noy's presidential bid."

Dantes, a GMA-7 talent, is considered the biggest threat to the leading man status of Rama's son, Richard Gutierrez.

In her statement, Aquino also apologized to Rama for any distress that she and her family caused. "Hindi po ako mayabang, kaya ako nagpapakumbaba ngayon," she said.

She also said she told her brother that she is willing to move elsewhere if he wins the presidency and she is deemed a liability.

"I promised Noy that if he does win, and I'm a cause of stress for him and his presidency, I'll gladly take my 2 boys to live anywhere there is TFC so that I can continue to work but with our overseas Filipino brothers & sisters," she said.

She said Noynoy reprimanded her by saying: "Dinner daw yun- hindi teleserye ko."

Ruffa walks out of "The Buzz"

Rama admitted Sunday that she asked her daughter Ruffa to leave "The Buzz" set after she became fed up with co-host Aquino's constant interruptions during the show. "Naiinggit siya kay Ruffa siguro," Rama said during a phone interview over the talk show "Showbiz Central."

"Umiyak si Ruffa. Kanina pa, sa dressing room. Sabi ko, umalis ka na diyan sa The Buzz... Siya kasi makulit. Siya gusto niya magtrabaho. Ruffa, naiintindihan kita, nagtatrabaho ka sa ‘The Buzz’. Pero kung babastusin ka ni Kris eh hindi naman na tama iyon. At hindi ka lumalaban, eh binabara ka niya lagi. Ba't naman ganoon? Pinapabayaan mong api-apihin ka diyan?" she told host Pia Guanio.

Rama said that she already told ABS-CBN bosses that she was pulling out her daughter from the show.

"Ako, nagpaalam ako kay Cory [Vidanes, ABS-CBN Channel Head], kay Charo [Santos-Concio, ABS-CBN President], at saka kay Linggit Tan [ABS-CBN Head of Entertainment Production] na ipu-pull-out ko na si Ruffa. I did not tell them what's the reason, pero sa ginawa niya kay Ruffa...

She also had some harsh words for Aquino.

"Kaya ako'y nananawagan sa taumbayan na huwag niyo na iboto si Noynoy [Aquino, Kris's brother running for the presidency], kasi hindi pa nga nananalo si Noynoy eh ang yabang-yabang na ni Kris. Akala mo siya na ang may-ari ng showbiz," she said during the interview.

Ballsy defends Kris

Aquino's older sister, Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, meanwhile defended Aquino from comments that she is turning into a liability for Noynoy.

"I don't think she's a liability. Everywhere I go they ask about Kris and am told they love her," she said.

Ballsy said Kris has been a big help in raising funds for their brother's presidential bid. Asked if Kris was turning Noynoy's campaign all about herself, she replied: "Of course not. That's so unfair naman. If you know Kris, you will see what a big, kind and generous heart she has."

Talent manager and columnist Lolit Solis, meanwhile, urged Kris to take a leave from showbiz talk shows for the duration of the campaign.

Solis said all of Aquino's words and actions could be twisted and used to attack Noynoy's campaign. Kris currently hosts "The Buzz" while she is a judge on ABS-CBN's talent show "Pilipinas Got Talent." She is also part of the cast of the primetime teleserye "Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo."

She is currently on leave from her nightly gossip show "SNN."

The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting earlier urged celebrity endorsers such as Kris Aquino and Willie Revillame to take a leave from their shows during election season. Aquino, however, said she is banned from using her shows to promote the candidacy of her brother.

Despite her walkout, Gutierrez has stated in her Twitter account that she will continue to support Noynoy's candidacy.
